Sail and Trekking on the Sicily and Aeolian volcanos Sail and Trekking on the Sicily and Aeolian volcanos combines the sailing and the ascents of the 3 famous Sicily active volcanos, in a unique environment, the Mediterranean Sea. The great sailing, the wonderful volcanos ascents, the local wine and food will leave you an unforgettable experience. A fantastic opportunity and a great adventure, in the wilderness and in the nature. We sail around Sicily coast, stopping over in the most enchanting bays of the Aeolien Islands, to enjoying the wonderful Mediterranean sea. The Aeolian Islands bring all the magic and mythological charm already in their name: they are the islands of the Aeolian, the Lord of the Winds, Aeolus. Traveling by a sailing boat, moved by the wind, will make you live deeply the fantasy, the nature and the history of this land. The guided hikes, take you to discover the summit of Etna (3.340 m), Stromboli (924 m) volcano. The airport of Catania and Palermo have regular flights from most european cities. Skill level: beginner Fitness level: open to everyone Trip level: easy Type of trip: open group (for private trips please contact us for a bespoke activity) DESCRIPTION In the Sail and Trekking on the Sicily and Aeolian volcanos program, you will see really close the Stromboli explosion and the big Etna crater. From the summits of the volcano you will enjoy amazing views towards the Mediterranean sea. At the end you will discover the authentic and traditional flavors of Sicily, with a special consideration for its fine wine. During the day we will discover the island through some easy trekking and every evening we will reach our boat, to be able to sleep in on our comfortable cabins. The great sailing, the bays for our hike sessions, the local food will make you leaving an amazing adventure that you won’t easily forget. Local safety regulations and laws allow to the summit areas of the volcanos only under the leading of registered mountain guides or volcano guides. Depending on the sea, on the weather condition and on the volcanos safety condition, the program can be changed in any moment. PREREQUISITES There are no technical difficulties, it is sufficient to be trained for a 600m hike. Please note that depending on the wind and sea state the skipper might decide to change some of the anchorages and the program. EQUIPMENT Equipment needed for the volcano summit days: trekking boots, sunglasses, 15-20 liter backpack, hat, sunscreen, one pair of gloves, water bottle, wind jacket, down jacket or similar, poles, gaters. Helmet is obligatory on the volcano summits.
Giorno 1
Arriving day in Palermo or Catania. The van brings us to Milazzo, historical town of Sicily. We have a briefing and we spend the first night on the boat in Milazzo harbuor, our departure base.
Giorno 2
Sailing day to our first island called Vulcano. Ones we reached the island, we climb to the summit, visit the fumaroles and tour the crater ring. The descend is through the pyroclastic deposits (volcanic ash), after which we visit the mud baths and bathe in the sulphurous waters.
Giorno 3
Sailing to Stromboli and tour of the island and it’s village.
Giorno 4
We have a trekking on the island, to some amasing view points of the Sciara del Fuoco, lava fields and eruptive channels.
Giorno 5
Trekking to the Stromboli Volcano. In the afternoon we climb towards the summit from which you can appreciate the Strombolian activity. There are between 3-4 explosions every hour. The activity of the Volcano explosions started from 2,000 years ago. The return is done at night, using headtorches along the sandy/ashes channels.
Giorno 6
Nice long sailing back to Milazzo harbour, where we spend the night.
Giorno 7
Trekking to the summit of Etna. The van bring us to Rifugio Sapienza (1.900 m), on the South side of the volcano. We take a cable car to 2.500 m of altitude. Special off-road busses bring us to the starting point of the excursion (2.900 m). On the summit we tour the Central Crater (3.340 m). At this point we admire the ancient and recent lavaflows which characterize the surrounding area. You can enjoy also an incomparable panorama, extending out over the Tirrenian and Ionic Sea. We plan to cross the summit from South to North, reaching Piano Provenzana, with long descent to 1.800 m. We cross wooded areas with various essential vegetation and a variety of lava fields from various periods. Once we reach the base area of the North side of Etna, with the van we go back to Milazzo.
